FCT Minister Wike Announces Mandatory Security Checks for Abuja Taxi Drivers Starting January 2025
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced that from January 2025, all commercial taxi and bus drivers in Abuja will be required to undergo security profiling with the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
This move is aimed at combating kidnapping and “one-chance” robberies within the nation’s capital.
Wike made this statement on Thursday during the distribution of 80 vehicles to FCT youths as part of the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Program. He emphasized the vehicles were provided at no cost, stating, “These vehicles are brand new. They (beneficiaries) are not paying a kobo. This is the government’s support for youths, aimed at reducing transportation costs in the city.”
The minister also highlighted a broader vision to modernize Abuja’s transportation system, with Keke NAPEP and motorcycles phased out in key districts such as Guzape, Maitama, and Asokoro, as more vehicles are introduced to replace them. Once operational, designated bus terminals—currently under construction—will centralize public transportation, ensuring regulated operations and improved city-wide mobility.
Wike added that the FCT administration is committed to youth and women empowerment, noting the creation of the Youth Secretariat and the Women Affairs Secretariat as part of President Bola Tinubu’s vision to enhance community support and inclusion.
