Airbnb Bans Parties And Events Permanently
Today, Airbnb formally adopted its ban on parties and events, formalizing it as its company policy.
Airbnb banned house parties and events temporarily in 2020 to comply with social distancing restrictions due to the pandemic. Having been so pleased with the outcome, the company is now codifying the ban and making it permanent.
“Over time, the party ban became much more than a public health measure,” said the company in a blog post. “It developed into a bedrock community policy to support our Hosts and their neighbours.”
Airbnb warned that guests who violate its policy would face severe consequences, ranging from account suspensions to removal from the platform.
The ban prohibits “all disruptive parties and events,” with a particular focus on open-invite gatherings (those advertised on social media) and “party house” properties. As a general rule, disruptive parties and events are characterized by complaints from neighbours. According to Airbnb, some 6,600 guests had their accounts suspended for violating the party ban in 2021.
Airbnb will however end its 16-person occupancy cap due to COVID concerns about large gatherings before vaccines were introduced. Consequently, larger properties like castles, vineyards, and beachfront villas can reopen to visitors while still meeting the regulations regarding disruptive parties.
