Canada Expands Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Program to 13 Additional Countries
Exciting news for international travellers! The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, recently announced the inclusion of 13 countries in Canada’s electronic travel authorization (eTA) program.
This development brings convenience and ease to eligible travellers from these countries who are planning to visit Canada by air. With the introduction of visa-free travel, exploring the beauty and opportunities of Canada has become faster, simpler, and more affordable.
Expansion of the eTA Program: Effective immediately, citizens from the following countries can now apply for an eTA instead of a visa if they have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or currently possess a valid United States non-immigrant visa:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Argentina
- Costa Rica
- Morocco
- Panama
- Philippines
- St. Kitts and Nevis
- St. Lucia
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Seychelles
- Thailand
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Uruguay
Benefits and Implications:
The expansion of the eTA program brings numerous advantages to both travellers and Canada. It streamlines the travel process, allowing eligible individuals to visit Canada for up to six months without the need for a traditional visa. This change aims to boost travel, tourism, and international business, thereby contributing to the growth of Canada’s economy. Additionally, it strengthens Canada’s relationships with these countries while ensuring the safety of Canadian citizens.
Efficiency and Caseload Diversion:
By diverting thousands of applications from the visa caseload, this decision enables Canadian authorities to process visa applications more efficiently. The improved processing times will benefit all visa applicants, making the overall system more streamlined and effective.
Exceptions and Visitor Visa Requirements:
It’s important to note that individuals who currently possess a valid visa can continue to use it for travel to Canada. Those who are not eligible for an eTA or are travelling to Canada by means other than air (such as by car, bus, train, or boat, including cruise ships) will still need to obtain a visitor visa.
