Elikem Kumordzie Explains Why Ghana Can’t Host A Big Brother Reality Show

Former Big Brother Africa contestant, Elikem Kumordzie, has said that Ghana does not have what it takes to put up a Big Brother reality show.

Speaking to Eugene Osarfo Nkansah on Nkonkonsa TV, he said, the experience he has had with such huge production makes him pessimistic about Ghana’s ability to host such a show.

“I’ve been in the backstage of the Big Brother Africa, and it’s such a huge production which needs a lot of resources and technical know-how that I think Ghana does not have. Unfortunately. First of all, it is our infrastructure. Secondly, it is the mediocrity we put into our craft. Most Ghanaian producers and filmmakers play mediocrity.

Elikem added that having been on a number of been movie and TV show sets, he has realised that “they won’t start on time, their lighting is bad, their sound is damaged, everything is off.”

“So for some of us who have had experience with solid productions coming from South Africa, coming from the UK, I see them mediocrity in our production. We have the talents, we have most of the equipment, but we just don’t play a serious game,” he further noted.

He, however, said there are a few film and television producers who have made Ghana proud with their works. He mentioned Ivan Quashiga, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, Leila Djansi, Abdul Salam Mumuni, and Juliet Asante as some filmmakers who stand out from their peers.

In 2013, Elikem Kumordzie, a fashion designer, represented Ghana at the 8th edition of the Big Brother Africa contest. He finished in third place on Day 91 after receiving 3/15 votes to win. https://www.youtube.com/embed/9CM8iK_sYLU?start=184&feature=oembed

Even though the reality show has taken a break on the Africa level, its Nigerian version has been very successful, getting eyeballs for its viewers across the globe.

Conversation in the media space regarding a possible production of a Ghana version seems unattainable, especially on the side of MultiChoice and Endamol.

Aside from the factors listed by Elikem, others have cited Ghana’s small population as a reason it may take a long time for the reality show to come to Ghana.

Some Ghanaian personalities who have been to the Big Brother Africa reality show apart from Elikem are Sammy B, Kweku T, Alex Biney, Ras Wayo, Mimi Andani, DKB, Keita, Eazzy and Selly Gally.
